Come learn Zentangle!

On Saturday, May 7th at 1:00p.m., Appalachian Arts Center will offer a Basic Zentangle®101 workshop. The Zentangle Method is an easy -to -learn, relaxing, and fun way to make art by drawing deliberate strokes, which build upon each other to form structured patterns. If you can write your name, you can use this method to create beautiful images. Zentangle increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction, along with an increased sense of personal well-being. It is enjoyed all over the world, across a wide range of skills, interests, and ages. “Creating Zentangle art can be a form of meditation, allowing the creator to enter a state of relaxed focus in which intuitive insights and fresh ideas flow freely. Because it uses a non-verbal language of patterns and proportions, it can open doors to inspiration, unhindered by expectations or anxiety.” By practicing the Zentangle Method's suggestion to make each stroke deliberate, participants understand how those apparently small and insignificant "strokes" of our moment to moment lives contribute to an overall life pattern, wherein life is an art form and everyone is an artist. This class will provide the beginner with a background in the history of Zentangle, introduce them to the basic steps of the method and expose them to associated vocabulary and tools used. Students will be immersed in creating actual Zentangle tiles and will leave with a clear understanding that, "anything is possible one stroke at a time."

The workshop is designed to last three hours including a 15 minute break halfway through, and will be taught by Kat van Rooyen, CZT, an artist whose work is represented at the Arts Center, and through her own business: Hearts Untangled Studios. Kat received her certification to teach from the founders of the Zentangle method: Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in Providence, Rhode Island. The class is limited to 12 participants, so make sure to register early to reserve your spot. The cost of the workshop is $35 and includes all supplies. Payments must be received in advance to hold a spot, and can be made via credit card by calling the Arts Center at 276-596-9188, or by stopping by the Center during regular business hours: Tuesday- Friday: 12-6pm; and Saturday: 10am-6pm. Appalachian Arts Center, a part of Southwest Virginia Community College, is located in the ‘Old Archie Helton Store’ on Rt. 19, 2.5 miles south of Claypool Hill.
