Art Classes for K-3rd graders

Appalachian Arts Center will offer a workshop entitled, “Drawing & Painting My Favorite Things" for children currently in kindergarten, first, second, or third grade. The workshop will be focused on learning to draw and paint real life objects – from dance shoes, to an action hero figure, to a raggedy old stuffed animal, to a catcher’s mitt – things, in other words, that hold a special place in each child’s heart.

During the first session, participants are asked to bring with them that special item of attachment, but something not too big and not too small, so that it will fit on a table. During the following sessions, children will explore how to illustrate the way to a special place in their lives through mapping; how to create a 3-D ice cream sundae on paper; and how to draw a portrait of a person they love. Painting with watercolors will also be taught in the process of finishing some projects, so children should wear old clothes or bring an old shirt to put over their clothes.

The 4 class session will be held on the following Thursdays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at Appalachian Arts Center: April 16, 23, 30, and May 7. Master watercolor artist and mural painter Ellen Elmes will be teaching the class. Come join us - it will be fun!!

Please call Appalachian Arts Center at 276.596.9188 to register for the workshop, or for more information. There is space for twelve students and participants will be registered for the class on a first-come, first-served basis. Tuition for the 4 session workshop is $45.00. Payment must be received in advance of the start of class to hold the child’s spot. Payments may be made by phone via credit card, or at the Arts Center during normal business hours: Tuesday- Friday: 12:00-6:00p.m; or Saturday: 10:00a.m-6:00p.m.

Appalachian Arts Center, a part of Southwest Virginia Community College, is located on Route 19 in the ‘Old Archie Helton Store’ - 2.5 miles south of Claypool Hill.
