Fabric Basketry Workshop
Appalachian Arts Center is sponsoring a basket making workshop on October 12 from 10:00am-3:00pm with renowned fiber artist Sylvia Richardson.
Mrs. Richardson, primarily known for her quilting, as a “painter with fabric,” displayed 15 of her quilts at the Center this past summer. Her work has been displayed in museums and art centers across the eastern United States, and images of her unique quilts have been published in numerous magazines, including: Folk Art Magazine, Baltimore Album Revival, Watercolor Impressions, Quilter’s Newsletter, Veranda, and American Quilter. She has traveled, lectured and taught quilting extensively in her “retirement” and has accumulated an impressive collection of awards and ribbons from various quilt contests and guild challenges.
In addition to her quilting, Mrs. Richardson also creates remarkable colorful fabric baskets from the remnants of her quilting projects. Participants in the workshop on October 12th will learn her process in making such baskets. The cost for the workshop is $35 per person and the workshop will be limited to 14 participants, so be sure to register early! Participants should bring the following items to the class: a sewing machine capable of doing a zig zag stitch, a mix of different fabrics that look good together (equaling roughly 3/4 of a yard), thread to match, and 50 feet of 100% cotton clothing line. Clothing line will also be available for purchase the day of the class, if preferred.
